We are proud of our Secondary School at CIS because we have taken great care to create two distinct divisions: Middle School students from Grades 6 to 8 and High School students from Grades 9 to 12, offering programs and activities tailored to meet the cognitive, developmental and social needs of the students in each school division. In both Middle and High, the core academic program includes instruction in five major subject areas: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Spanish and Social Studies. CIS offers a variety of elective courses to high school students including several courses in technology, speech and debate, physical education, and many others. Physical Education is a part of each Middle School student’s program as is music, art and technology.
Both the Middle School and the High School have their own Student Leadership councils that give the students a voice in school affairs. Our intramural and after-school activities program is growing each year to address the many and varied interests and aptitudes of our students.
The goal for each of our students is to prepare them for the next chapter in their educational career, be it high school for our younger students or college or university for our high schoolers. To this end, we offer guidance in the form of college counseling, formal academic assistance for selected students, and programs that address the social and emotional needs of our students.
For those high school students who choose to engage in a more rigorous academic program, CIS serves as an authorized school for the International Baccalaureate Programme for Grades 11 and 12. Students in Grades 11 and 12 may choose to take IB courses for the IB Diploma or to earn certificates in specific IB classes. These advanced courses are seen most favorably by colleges and universities in the Americas, the UK and the rest of Europe, as well as many nations in the Far East. CIS also offers a US high school diploma which is comparable to those offered in the best public and private schools in the United States and Canada. Students who complete the required credits and maintain the necessary academic scores earn an American secondary school diploma. Those who opt for the full IB program receive the American High School diploma as well as the IB Diploma.
Each grade level in the secondary school plans and conducts what we call the “Beyond the School Campus” program. This program provides students the opportunity to visit local or overseas venues to study and explore. Trips vary from one to five days depending on grade level and provide the means for students to collaborate with their classmates on-site, provide service to others, experience personal growth, and apply classroom learning while on their excursion.
Monthly assemblies are held to bring students, teachers and parents together for celebrations of learning. Each assembly focuses on character education. Our students are encouraged to become compassionate, aware of and sensitive to the larger world around them. To this end our assemblies emphasize lifelong learning, the value of inquiry, and communication, open-mindedness and caring. We are preparing our students to become tomorrow’s global leaders.
The secondary school day is from 8:00am to 3:15pm. Lunch can be ordered in advance through the school or brought from home. There is a school and PE uniform policy for secondary students. Text books are provided by the school but their care and maintenance are the responsibility of the student receiving them on loan. A school locker is provided for each student.
CIS is growing and thriving. We are confident in a productive and rewarding future for the students we serve.
