Service Learning

CIS strives to promote Service Learning throughout the year.  In addition to community service opportunities students are provided with opportunities to learn, grow, reflect, and make a difference through service learning.  Our service learning is directly aligned with the curriculum and standards.  It is globally and locally focused.  Individual classes as well as the whole school participate in a variety of service learning oriented activities all year long.

Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach through which students achieve curriculum goals while participating in community service. Students in service-learning experiences make connections between what they are studying in class and real-world community, social, political, and environmental issues.

Last school year the CIS students spent the month of March learning about and examining global health care.  The umbrella theme for the annual service learning project was poverty and ways to end extreme poverty in a lifetime.  Each week during the month all classes centered on a particular facet of global health and  contributed in a community building activity.  A culminating activity was a global village assembly and hunger banquet
