Author Visit: Linda Sue Park
Author Visit: Linda Sue Park

Last week, CIS welcomed best-selling and award-winning author Linda Sue Park to our campus. An author of more than 20 books for children, Ms. Park has traveled to almost 20 countries to talk to audiences of all ages about books, reading, and writing.

Elementary and Middle School students met Ms. Park during three separate assemblies last Wednesday. Students from Kindergarten to grade 2 read along to Bee-Bim Bop and Ms. Park's soon-to-be-released Gondra's Treasure, before being introduced to an engaging Korean clapping game.

Grades 3-5 students had the unique opportunity of hearing the backstories of three novels -

The Kite Fighters, A Single Shard, and When My Name Was Keoko; many of the students were amazed at the depth of research that went into writing each of these historical fiction stories.

Middle school students learned about how Ms. Park met Salva Dut, co-founder of the non-profit organization Water for South Sudan, and how his story inspired her to write A Long Walk to Water. Grade 7 students, who have recently finished reading the book, have culminated their learning with a 'Walk for Water' service project, which aims to raise at least $1000 towards bringing clean water to communities in South Sudan.

On Ms. Park's second day at CIS, Grades 5 and 7 students participated in a Writing Workshop with the author. Students learned how to "wake up their writing brains" with some short yet effective exercises and practiced a variety of revision techniques that Ms. Park uses extensively in her own writing process.

In between sessions, Ms. Park was thrilled to personally autograph books bought by families from our local bookseller, Book Nook.

Linda Sue Park was extremely touched by the warm welcome, kindness, and respect she received from the CIS community. At the end of her two successful days here, students presented Ms. Park a beautiful book of Cayman Art from the Kennedy Gallery to remind her of our gratitude for such an impactful visit.
